River Tam and her brother Simon are hiding out from the totalitarian government that experimented with River's brain aboard the space-freighter Serenity. Captained by a down on his luck, no faith soldier, the crew of Serenity must take jobs (legal or not) while avoiding the Alliance, and keeping the Tams safe. But when things get out of hand with the true extent of River's powers, the Alliance sends a new Operative to make sure what River knows doesn't get out. How will the crew of Serenity deal with this new threat? And what exactly does River know that the Operative is willing to kill for? The crew of the Serenity is getting desperate. They have lain lower and lower to protect their doctor, Simon Tam, and his telepathic traumatized little sister, River, from the alliance, whom he rescued her from a year earlier. This has made getting jobs harder and now they are desperate. When they take River on a robbery during which Reavers (humans who have gone crazy and turned into cannibals) attack, Simon decides that its time to leave the crew of the Serenity for his and River's safety. She then mutters "Miranda" and goes berserk and nearly shoots Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, until her brother says the safety word to put her to sleep. Reynolds decides to take them back on board for safety, only now an alliance operative is on their tracks and making Reynolds determined to find out what "Miranda" is and what the Alliance is hiding. I first became interested in FIREFLY, the series, and SERENITY, through the early trailers shown back in May. AFter seeing the trailer I rented the series, loved it, and since purchasing the DVD have seen it many times. I really looked forward to the movie. Unfortunately, the movie didn't live up to the trailer and was mediocre at best. None of the elements that made the series so enjoyable are present. Gone are deep character development and the lively interaction among the crew members. Book and Inara are really just cameos,while Kaylee, Wash, and even Simon have little to do. The heart of FIREFLY was the relationship between Simon and River, but it's little explored here. Humor and hints of romance are, for the most part, absent. The plot is action-heavy and really is just the crew trying to escape from Reavers. The entire rationale behind the Alliance's desperate need to eliminate River Tam is uninteresting and the explanation for the existence of the Reavers is truly lame. It was much more interesting to have the Reavers be humans who'd gone wild on the outer rim. I kept waiting for the "two-by-two, hands-of-blue" creeps to show up but they never did. Finally, the operative's bizarre about-face at the end makes no sense. Seeing this poor feature film makes me love the FIREFLY series even more. I was hooked at the end of the first half, when Mal opens up the crate carrying River. There will be no trilogy here. As a screenwriter and ardent fan of the Firefly series, I was fearing a letdown as a result of trying to condense a multi-season story arc into a two hour feature film. I was relieved and delighted with the results, thank goodness, and though its tone was considerably different from the TV series, it was still, pound for pound, the most enjoyable sci-fi film I've seen in years, maybe decades. It doesn't quite rank with the original Star Wars Trilogy, perhaps, but it blows away the ill-advised prequels, and it is a great deal stronger than the entertaining but ultimately pedestrian Star Trek features.<br/><br/>More important, though, is the broad appeal the movie has. While it obviously didn't make much noise at the box office, I have been delighted to find that everyone I spoke to who HAD seen it (only a handful of whom I strong-armed into going) enjoyed it a lot more than they had anticipated. Folks that normally don't go for the whole "nerdy space thing" were asking me pointed questions about the characters' back stories and where they could get their hands on the DVDs. Art film snobs, action adventure nuts, and the whole spectrum in between; everyone had a good time for the two hours they sat in the theater. For this reason, I really feel the film will continue to grow a following for years to come. Whether we get a continuation of the series or not, many years from now, this trim little adventure will be well established as a classic in the genre. Cheers, Mr. Whedon! Serenity shows what might have happened if Han Solo had been the focus of the original "Star Wars" instead of whiny Jedi wannabe Luke Skywalker. Serenity takes place approximately six months after the last Firefly episode, "Objects In Space". The events between the final episode of Firefly and the beginning of Serenity, including Inara and Shepherd Book leaving the ship, are chronicled in a Serenity three-part comic book series, written by Joss Whedon, called "Those Left Behind". The Verse is the star cluster that was settled by the human folk who left Earth-That-Was and founded the Alliance. Using material compiled by Josh Awtry, The Verse appears to consist principally of a trinary star system, with two other stars orbiting a central one. The Core and Border Worlds orbit the central "White Sun." The second, "Red Sun," which orbits the central sun in an 80-year orbit, and its planets comprise the Rim and the Frontier. The third "Blue Sun" orbits the central sun in a 730-year orbit and has no planets listed (although it may at some point be revealed to have its own planetary system). Malcolm Reynolds states (in "Our Mrs. Reynolds") that there are over seventy "little earths" spinning about, all told. According to Awtry, there are "215 terraformed worlds and moons, seven gas giants, seven protostars and five distinct star systems that comprise the star cluster known as The Verse." Or just an abbreviation of Universe. The final battle in Serenity actually occurs in the upper atmosphere of a planet so there would be air for sound to travel through. Even though the film had "disappointing" box office results, the DVD sales of the show and film have been overwhelming. Rumours had it that another film, whether a sequel or prequel, was in talks, but these have since been deemed false. In time, Joss Whedon had said, I've said repeatedly that I would love to make another movie with these guys, and that remains the case. It also remains the case that I'm booked up by Marvel for the next three years, and that I haven't even been able to get "Dr. Horrible 2" off the ground because of that. So I don't even entertain the notion of entertaining the notion of doing this, and wont. Couple years from now, when Nathan [Fillion]'s no longer [on] "Castle" and I'm no longer the Tom Hagen of the Marvel Universe and making a giant movie, we might look and see where the market is then. But right now, its a complete non-Kickstarter for me, He is bound by law five times for smuggling, tariff dodging, and transporting illegal cargo. He was a Sergeant in the Independent Army. 57th Brigade, and a volunteer. Awarded the Valor Commendation for the Battle of Serenity Valley. Joss Whedon revealed that Wash and Bookwere killed off when the actors playing those roles could not commit to sequels. This posed a difficult problem for Whedon, as Universal wanted to be sure that sequels could be made easily if the first film was a success. According to Whedon, it was the lawyers on the film who suggested killing off the characters in order to make Universal more sure about the project. He was initially reluctant, but soon agreed it was the best (and possibly only) viable solution. Whedon's original 190-page script told the same story, but with all of the crew surviving. It's possible, since Buffy/Angel and Cabin in the Woods all feature otherworldly threats and secret government organisations (the Initiative trying to exploit them, the Conspiracy trying to appease them, and Shield trying to combat them). Humanity may have left Earth to establish the Firefly/Serenity colonies after the Cabin in the Woods and Dollhouse apocalypses, and this would explain Paris being in ruins at the end of Alien: Resurrection. We also have the doll Miss Edith belonging to vampire Drusilla from Buffy/Angel in the basement in Cabin in the Woods; and Thor glimpsing the three figures dressed as a Wolf, a Ram and Hart in his dream in Avengers; Age of Ultron; Wolfram and Hart being the villains from Angel.
